Garden Pergola Stowmarket - Garden Fence Panels Needham Market

Everyone likes to have a break in the summer – and in many cases this is determined by the school holidays. However, a summer getaway could pose a problem for the keen gardener who is also worried about security and ongoing care and attention for their plants.

Fortunately, help is at hand as there are a number of products which could help put your mind at rest, even if you are thousands of miles away. Here Lumberjacks, who supply outdoor lighting in Ipswich and across Suffolk, identify a few potential key purchases to help your garden safe and secure, not just when you’re away on holiday but all throughout the year.

Install Solid Gates (and Fences)

Gates can provide an effective barrier, deterring any would-be thieves. This applies particularly to any solid gates – although any form of entrance is better than nothing, particularly if it’s locked or linked to a security system such as a keypad.

The same applies to fences, as they should prevent anyone from assessing what valuables you have in your garden (and also from providing indirect access to the rest of your home).

Small trellis tops can also be added to existing fences to provide additional height and security.

Put Portables in the Garden Shed…

If you have already got a garden shed, summerhouse or storage unit, put all your garden furniture and anything portable into it for the duration of your holiday, to keep them safe and secure.

The same applies to any tools or gardening equipment which might be in the garage.

Browse our full range of garden gates and fences; we can also supply you with either an Apex or a Pent shed, wherever you live in Suffolk. (Check out our full range of sheds and summerhouses here).

…and Lock it Up

It may seem obvious, but as many as one in five domestic burglaries are actually thefts from outbuildings, including sheds and garages, so you should make sure everything is secure, whether that’s by using a lock, padlock, or a security keypad system.

At Lumberjacks we can supply Squire security locks, some of which may be suitable for gates as well.

Install Outdoor Lighting

One way of convincing the outside world – and would-be thieves in particular – that you are at home when you aren’t is to install outdoor lighting.

It’s particularly effective if you have it on an automated timer schedule, so it will come on during the early evening when you might be expected to be at home.

At Lumberjacks we stock Ellumiere lighting; it’s low voltage (so shouldn’t increase your electricity bill too much) and easy to install thanks to our range of cables, connectors and transformers.

Lay Down Artificial Turf

There’s a range of low-maintenance plants you can buy if you are worried about watering them in your absence, such as lavender, rosemary, some roses, summer lilacs – they should be able to cope with a dry spell even if you are away.

And, in the long term, growing certain types of shrubs and hedges such as pyracantha, blackthorn and hawthorn may be prickly enough to deter some would-be intruders.

You could also consider installing artificial turf – you can go away and be sure that your lawn will look just as good as it did before you went away.

And Cultivate Good Neighbours

Even if you cancel the mail and the milk for the duration of your holiday and have invested in some of the products listed above, it’s also worth being on good terms with your neighbours – they may be able to keep an eye on things while you’re away if you don’t have any friends or family nearby to check on your home.

They may also be able to water your plants if there’s a particularly dry spell (if you ask nicely!).
