New-build gardens Ipswich - come to Lumberjacks

Many gardens which come with new-build homes are effectively a blank canvas, with      owners starting from scratch when it comes to creating a welcoming and vibrant outdoor space.

Here we look at some of the essentials which can help improve many new-build gardens – and why Lumberjacks in Ipswich is the ideal one-stop-shop if you have just moved in.

Turf

Some, but not all, new-build homes will come with their own lawn. If it doesn’t, and you just have a bare patch of soil, then the time to start creating one is either now (in spring) or in autumn, according to the Royal Horticultural Society.

You need to avoid laying it when it’s too cold (that is, no winter frosts to damage the grass), or too warm. Both spring and autumn provide the ideal climate and give the roots of the grass plenty of time to establish themselves.

It is worth leaving a space between the turf and any garden fences – that way the grass becomes easier to cut.

At Lumberjacks, if you are looking for natural grass, then we supply real turf rolls. However, it may be worth checking your soil type to see if it needs any boosting with a conditioner or improver, and whether your garden gets the right amount of sun to encourage the grass’s growth. This also applies to many plants which you might wish to grow.

If growing natural grass is a problem, then we also supply artificial grass to customers across Suffolk. If you buy any of our artificial turf (above) you won’t have to worry about whether the soil is suitable or undertake any of the hard graft that goes with creating your own lawn.

Paving Slabs

Many people like to have a patio so they can enjoy their garden to the full – perhaps treating it as an outdoor dining space. However, these don’t always come as part of a new-build home’s sale price.

As with the turf, you may need to consider how much sun your garden gets – while most people prefer to have it close to the house if they want to use it as an outdoor dining space, it may be better to have it at the far end of the garden if it’s lighter and brighter there (and there could be more privacy as the neighbouring homes may not be as close).

At Lumberjacks we can help if you want to create your own as we supply porcelain and natural stone paving slabs. If you aren’t sure which type would fit your garden best, then check out our previous blog post here, which also links to our relevant product range.

Sleepers

Wooden sleepers are well worth investing in, because they are so versatile. They can help with levelling out – for instance, if there’s a difference in elevation between a new patio and the rest of the garden.

They can also form the framework for a raised garden bed (see tha main image, top), which can be useful if either there’s a shortage of space in the garden, which is often the case with new-builds, or if the soil quality is poor. It’s much easier to control the soil quality in such a feature because you can easily add some mulch, compost or soil conditioner.

You can also use sleepers as the basis for paths, steps, decking, edging for beds and many other functions. To check out our range of sleepers and accessories, follow this link.

Sheds

Most new-build homes won’t come with a garden shed. Depending on your space, and what you want to do with your garden, and if you have a garage (again, many new-builds just have a driveway) you may find that some outdoor storage space soon becomes essential. A garden shed is somewhere to put your tools all year round, and it will protect any patio furniture during the colder and wetter winter months.

At Lumberjacks, we stock a range of Apex and Pent sheds as well as compact storage units and shelters – for more details, click here.
