New-build gardens Ipswich – supplied by Lumberjacks

Although most new-build gardens tend to be on the small side – developers usually want to squeeze the maximum number of houses into the smallest possible space – some properties come with much more room.

Lumberjacks, who can act as a one-stop shop for anyone with a new-build garden in Ipswich and across Suffolk, look at your options if you are starting from scratch, but have a much bigger budget (as well as a larger space) to work with.

Consult a Professional

You need to assess what you are working with – what the overall space is, what the soil type is, and other similar considerations. You need to work out what your priorities are in design terms before you commit any time or money to anything.

It may be worthwhile calling in an expert local landscape gardener at this stage – they will know not just about soil types, but the local weather, as well as what plants go well together (and which ones don’t).

At Lumberjacks, we are happy to work with garden designers for larger projects and have all the materials you are likely to need, whatever you want to do with your outdoor space.

Sort out the Hard Landscaping Elements First

It’s best to get the hard landscaping elements of any project sorted out first as they will provide the backbone or structure of your garden, and the plants can be added later.

Hard landscaping elements include rockeries, pathways and patios – all of which we can help you with. This includes aggregates and decorative stones, paving and accessories.

If you need any help laying down a new patio, check out our previous blog post here or download our how-to guide.

Sort Out the Plants

With a larger new-build garden, you should have space (and time) for a range of flowers and shrubs. If you want any fast-growing plants then buddleias, lavatera and hardy annuals like poppies and cornflowers are all good choices, according to the Royal Horticultural Society.

You can mix these up with slower-growing, low-maintenance plants such as hardy evergreens, and you will probably have the space to create your own vegetable patch. You can do this in raised beds if the soil quality is poor.

Lay the Lawn (If You Need One)

Whatever the size, your new property won’t necessarily come with a pristine lawn, but you should have space to fit one in, whether you want natural or artificial grass. If you opt for one of our real turf rolls, the best time to lay it down is either this month (April) or October because it will give the roots the maximum amount of time to establish themselves, according to the RHS.

However, if you don’t have children (or pets) who need somewhere to play then it may be worth asking if you really need a lawn at all. Decorative stones make for an attractive alternative.

Add the Furniture

Don’t forget to put the finishing touches to your garden. If you are on your third of fourth house move, then the chances are you will have some garden furniture. But you may not have the right type to fit your new garden, or maybe it is showing signs of age.

Check out our current range here. It includes chimineas and firepits, which are ideal accessories for any new patio area, as in partnership they can extend your dining area from the inside to the outside.
